Which way is the wind blowing today, Mr President?

Axios has a post listing the many tweets over the years in which Trump has called for America to get out of Afghanistan completely.

Everyone's expecting that he will shortly announce more troops going in.   Nearly everyone is also expecting that Bannon will blast the decision from Breitbart as a Trump capitulation to the Generals.   I also think that most people would be very surprised to see an extra 5,000 or so troops making a long term difference.   Short term, yes, maybe; long term - no.

To be honest, I don't know enough about the situation in Afghanistan to know what is the best thing to do.  But then, I didn't spend years criticising Obama either for his decisions about dealing with the complex issue.

blame this on Bannon leaving. for the rest of the world he would probably have been the lesser evil

Sorry, can't see that Bannon's "economic nationalism" would result in better long term international relationships for the US - and as such would likely increase instability globally.

That's not to say that Bannon might be right on one issue - such as the dubious value of increasing troops in Afghanistan, again; it's more that if he was too influential he was likely to do long term harm to global stability.

And I now invite Homer to adjudicate on which of us is right. :)

By the way, as I noted the other day, Bannon was right about North Korea and the impossibility of taking it out militarily without dire consequences for South Korea - mind you, everyone knows that unless they are a complete wingnut.

Yeah Bannon was right about North koreas. how influential was he? Well obviously Trump thought Bannon was getting too much publicity which is a lot different to influence. On foreign Affairs and Defence issues I would back the former generals over Bannon.

Trump barely remembered what his position on Afghanistan was in the Campaign , probably because of his age. Big deal.
No surprises anyhere really. Trump is merely acting out what most people would have thought.
